A devastating landslide triggered by days of heavy rainfall has claimed the lives of five people, including four siblings from the same family, in Ikot Anwatim Community, Ikot Ansa, Calabar Municipality, Cross River State. The tragedy occurred after saturated soil collapsed onto residential buildings, burying the victims beneath rubble. �

The deceased children have been identified as:

Bright Kingsley Edu (18)

Godswill Kingsley Edu (12)

Daniel Kingsley Edu (11)

Richard Kingsley Edu (10)

The fifth victim was identified as Mr. Udo, believed to be a tanker driver. �

Mother's Heartbreaking Reaction

The children's mother, Mrs. Mercy Kingsley Edu, expressed profound grief after losing four of her seven children.

According to reports, she cried:

"Why me? Four out of seven gone in one day."

Her husband was described as a hardworking father who had sacrificed greatly to provide education for his children. �

Rescue and Emergency Response

Officials from the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society visited the scene to assess the damage and support affected families.

The agency confirmed:

Five fatalities.

Two houses destroyed.

Two other residents injured.

Immediate humanitarian assistance for affected families has been recommended. �

Government's Response;

CR-SEMA Director-General Mr. Efa Nyong described the incident as heartbreaking and called for:

A comprehensive geotechnical assessment of the area.

Increased public awareness of landslide risks.

Possible relocation of residents living in high-risk communities.

Continued emergency support for victims and survivors. 

The incident has sparked renewed calls for improved drainage systems, stronger disaster preparedness, and better protection for communities located in flood- and landslide-prone areas.
